Healthy Living Progress Update

Party for the People!!!

We are pleased to invite you to attend our second annual celebration, Party for the People (see attached flyer), which will be held on Friday November 2nd from 7-9:30pm at Jubilee! on Wall Street. This event is an opportunity for Asheville residents from diverse communities to come together and enjoy a super-fun night of live entertainment featuring the Secret B-Sides, the Urban Arts Institute, and La’Ney African Dance Troupe, as well as lots of great local food from Green Opportunities’ Kitchen Ready Program, childcare, doorprizes, awards, raffles, and more! The evening is being supported by community sponsorships and by love donations made by attendees (as little or as much as you would like), and any excess funds will support our work with the Healthy Living Program. We would love for you to come out and enjoy this family friendly evening! Tickets may be purchased ahead of time at our website, or at the door the evening of the event. Also, transportation can be arranged for those without access to private transportation by calling our office prior to November 2nd.

Party for the People requires lots of volunteer support in order to be successful, and we’re currently accepting volunteers in the areas of pre-event administrative support, childcare at the event, and a number of people to assist with event set-up, clean-up, and other activities. Please call or email Nicole at 828-255-8777 or if you’d like to assist!

The Women’s Wellbeing and Development Foundation had the great fortune to be part of the recent Sustainable Communities Initiative: East of the Riverway tour on September 13th. This site visit to apartment 17A in Hillcrest provided us the opportunity to share the Healthy Living Program with a variety of local organizations and professionals. In addition to presenting the details of our work (see the attached What we’re doing doc) we had the opportunity to offer participants our 2012 Wish List, which contained a break-down of items and funding that would best support our work at this time. We look forward to continuing to build on the relationships begun or enhanced that day, and would also like to make our Wish List accessible to others who might like to support the Healthy Living Program. If you would like to receive a 2012 Wishlist please call or email Nicole at the office.

Lots of interesting activities are taking place in the Healthy Living Program. The Scrapbooking Party on September 29th at Hillcrest was a fun way for the participants of the Hiking Series to create creative keepsake albums of their most memorable moments and personal achievements during the series! Check out our facebook page for pictures from that day. The weekly Herbs and Wellness class continues to be very well-attended by adults and children of the Hillcrest community, and has been engaging in such fun activities as going on Plant Walks in Bent Creek, making body butter and lotion from scratch, and making herbal throat lozenges and heartburn relief products! There are some exciting activities coming up as well, such as the greatly anticipated Girls’ Sleepover at 17A, Voters’ Rights Info Sessions at the Community Center, and an addition to the weekly Girls’ Discussion Group called Girl Talk, in which adolescent participants (with their parents’ permission) will have the opportunity to discuss and learn about the changes taking place in their bodies, birth control options, and developing a healthy attitude toward sexuality. Girl Talk is made possible by UNCA student, Rachel Foster’s service learning contribution to the organization, and collaborative content planning with Shilpa Reddy of Our Voice.

If you or someone you know would like to get involved with the Healthy Living Program as a volunteer or financial contributor we welcome you to call or email our office so that we can schedule an appointment to meet and discuss your interests and how we might work together to achieve our shared vision of a community in which everyone thrives! Thanks, and have a wonderful week!
